What is Zakat and the nisab?
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam: a 2.5% annual due on qualifying wealth held for a full lunar year (hawl), once your net wealth exceeds the nisab threshold. Nisab is the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver; most scholars suggest using the silver nisab so more of your wealth benefits those in need. The calculator uses live gold and silver prices to set the nisab in INR automatically.
What wealth is zakatable?
- Add: cash and bank balances, gold and silver, shares/mutual funds and other investments, money owed to you that you expect back, and business stock.
- Subtract: immediate debts you owe (e.g. due bills, short-term loans).
- Usually excluded: your home you live in, personal car, and tools of your trade.

Zakat in India — practical notes
- Many Indians pay Zakat during Ramadan for convenience, but it's due once a full lunar year passes on wealth above nisab.
- Use the silver nisab (lower threshold) if you want to be cautious and benefit more recipients.
- Distribute to eligible recipients (the eight categories), e.g. via trusted local or national relief organisations.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is Zakat in India?
Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth (cash, gold, silver, shares, business assets, minus immediate debts) once it exceeds the nisab and has been held for one lunar year.
What is the nisab in rupees?
Nisab is the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver. In rupees it changes daily with metal prices — the calculator sets it from live gold/silver prices automatically. The silver nisab is lower.
Is Zakat due on shares and mutual funds in India?
Yes. The market value of shares and mutual funds held as investments is included in zakatable wealth. Add their current value to your cash and gold when calculating.
When should I pay Zakat?
Zakat is due once a full lunar year (hawl) passes on wealth above the nisab. Many people choose a fixed date such as a day in Ramadan and pay every year on that date.
Should I use the gold or silver nisab?
Either is valid; many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it is lower, meaning more people qualify and more wealth reaches those in need.
